The new year is fast approaching and as many will undoubtedly be pausing to reflect on the past 12 months, Beacon for Hope Executive Director Melissa Owen is encouraging individuals to “practice the pause.”
Essentially Owen is encouraging others to allow themselves to experience emotions associated with memories of the past that can often be triggered by periods of reflection such as the start of the new year.
Owen explains that many times a present issue can be deeply rooted in unresolved traumas from the distant past. She adds many times because of how long ago the trauma may have occurred, many individuals will discount the impact it continues to have on your life.
If you or someone you know may be struggling during the holidays, Owen says it is best to be prepared and make sure you surround yourself with “safe people” who can help provide comfort and support during a time of crisis.
If you believe you need assistance and do not have a support system in place to help you through a time of crisis, you can contact Beacon for Hope by calling 620-412-8355 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 9-8-8.
