There was a lot more smoke than fire at Simmons Pet Food early Monday.
Emporia Fire was dispatched to Simmons Pet Food, 1600 East Logan, shortly after 1 am Monday after a fire alarm went off. The response was upgraded to a structure fire shortly after 1:30 am. Battalion Chief Willie Ward tells KVOE News the first indication of fire was smoke inside an office.
Crews used thermal imaging cameras to find the source point — a light that melted and fell on papers and other items. They then spent over an hour afterward putting out the fire and looking for hot spots, including investigation time from the roof. It took about three hours to remove the smoke and carbon monoxide from the building.
There are no reports of injuries. Simmons Director of Brand and Engagement Lainie Button says there was limited damage to the QA lab area. At this time, no changes are expected for the holiday production schedule.
