The 2024 legislative session begins in a week.
Lawmakers return to Topeka on Jan. 8, and most of the legislators representing Lyon County have agreed to appear on KVOE’s Morning Show this week offer their thoughts on the upcoming session.
17th District Senator Jeff Longbine of Emporia will be our Newsmaker guest at 7:20 am Wednesday.
There will be two previews Thursday. 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber of Emporia will be the Newsmaker guest at 7:20 am that morning, followed by 76th District Representative Eric Smith of Burlington in the Newsmaker 3 slot at 8:40 am.
Governor Laura Kelly’s State of the State address will be at 6:30 pm Jan. 10, followed by the Republican response.
Medicaid expansion is already playing out as a big issue for this session, along with medical marijuana and revenues. This is a Presidential election year, but all lawmakers in both the Kansas House and Senate are up for election as well. House 13th District Republican Duane Droge has already filed for re-election, as has House 60th District Democrat challenger Mic McGuire.
