Emporia’s Flying J travel plaza is receiving federal funds to build an electric vehicle charging pad.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced Flying J as one of six locations splitting over $4.6 million for the state’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula program. Projects receiving funds under this program must offer at least a 20 percent local cash match.
The state program says EV charging stations have to be built on so-called Alternative Fuel Corridors. They must also be available every 50 miles within a travel mile of said corridors, offer at least 600 kilowatts of power and be able to charge at least four vehicles at the same time. On top of those requirements, the charging stations have to be “always accessible” to the public and to offer other amenities like restrooms, weather shelter and food and beverage options.
