Progress continues on the Peyton Street waterline replacement project.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says work has started on South Avenue, meaning the final stage is underway — but other work on Peyton continues at this time.
Ubert advises there is one-way eastbound traffic on South Avenue between Peyton and Carter currently underway as the project continues.
The Peyton Street project is designed to install new pipe eventually connecting both the city’s water towers and solidifying water service for southeast Emporia, which currently has the city’s heaviest water use. It should be done by spring.
Meanwhile, the city is almost halfway done with its downtown parking lot project involving the 600 and 700 blocks of Mechanic.
The 700 block parking lot will have about a two-month lag for installing lights.
Ubert says work on the 600 block should begin by mid-January. The goal is to finish the entire project by spring 2024, ahead of Unbound Gravel activities in late May and early June.
