A Kansas Army National Guard regiment with a detachment based in Emporia is leaving for its next deployment this upcoming weekend.
The First Battalion, 635th Armor Regiment will be part of a special departure ceremony at 10 am Jan. 14 at Stormont Vail Event Center in Topeka. Doors will open at 9 am.
Besides Emporia, the 635th has detachments in Junction City, Lawrence, Manhattan and Wichita.
Also involved in the departure ceremony will be the 170th Maintenance Company based in Wichita.
Both are deploying in support roles for Operation Spartan Shield. According to Adjutant General spokesperson Jane Welch, the mission is to “train military partners and provide an enduring presence that promotes peace and stability.” Other mission details are not being divulged.
US Army Central says Operation Spartan Shield is a United States Central Command “operation to strengthen defense relationships, build partner capacity, maintain readiness and, when necessary, execute contingency plans.” Operations are based in the Middle East.
