The Resource Center for Independent Living is celebrating after a five-digit grant.
The Trusler Foundation has granted $20,000 so RCIL can buy new durable medical equipment and can expand its accessible ramp construction work.
RCIL currently offers durable medical equipment for free loan to Lyon County residents dealing with short-term or long-term disabilities due to illness, injury or post-surgery rehabilitation. The item list includes wheelchairs, bath benches, commodes, walkers and other equipment.
In 2023, RCIL loaned nearly 1,000 pieces of equipment. RCIL says it will expand its loan inventory as it moves from the Humanitarian Center to 624 Commercial, possibly as soon as May.
RCIL also says it plans to repair or build handicapped-accessible ramps for homes meeting Americans with Disabilities Act standards through the RCIL Build A Ramp program. Projects will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, but RCIL says applications will be considered through a process ensuring “an equitable distribution of resources.”
