The congregation of Emporia’s First Church of the Nazarene had an extra reason to celebrate Sunday.
The church noted its 100th year of operation in Emporia. Pastor Paul Meinke says church members have always been seeking God’s will for them and the church.
Sunday’s special service included prayers, a recognition from Mid-America Nazarene University, messages from prior pastors and music.
The church officially started with 30 members on Jan. 1, 1924, thanks to three years of work by Rev. Roy Ball to start a Nazarene church in Emporia. A donation by Etta Marcellus Place, a charter member of the church, led to the church’s first permanent home at Second and Constitution. The church then moved to Seventh and Arundel in 1953 and to its current location at 24th and Industrial in 1973.
