No people were hurt, but five goats were killed after fire developed east of Emporia on Tuesday night.
Hartford-Neosho Rapids and Emporia firefighters went to 1252 Road T shortly before 8:30 pm. Hartford-Neosho Rapids Fire Chief Greg Zumbrunn says crews found two structures on fire when they arrived, a barn and a silo. The barn had partially collapsed as fire crews arrived, while the silo was still standing.
Both buildings are considered a total loss with an estimated damage amount above $80,000. The barn was used for goats, some of which survived. The silo, housing hunting equipment, is still standing.
Zumbrunn says the likely cause was a goat knocking over a heat lamp.
4 Rivers Electric also responded to the scene to secure utilities.
