One member of the Emporia High girls wrestling team claimed an individual championship at the Newton Tournament of Champions Thursday afternoon.
Senior Virginia Munoz won the 135-pound bracket with a 7-5 sudden victory in the championship match over Adiranna Chronister of Stillwell in the championship match. It’s the second consecutive year Munoz has won the Newton Tournament of Champions.
Two Lady Spartans finished second. Sophomore Kensley Medrano at 130 lost her title match by an 8-2 decision over Karoline Kendall of Blue Valley Southwest. Sophomore Alexa Castillo dropped her second match of the season as she was pinned in 1:56 against Trinity Williams of Derby.
Four other Lady Spartans placed. Allison Curtis finished fourth at 100. Katina Keosybounheuang was fourth at 120. Claire Starr finished fourth at 125. Breanna Wolf finished fifth at 145.
As a team, the Lady Spartans finished second with 178 points finishing behind Garden City.
Coach Shawn Russell said it was a good tournament for his team.
Emporia High will next be in action on January 20 at Olathe South.
