Shot clock will be coming to Kansas High School Basketball on a trial basis for the 2024-25 season.
A 35-second shot clock was approved by the KSHSAA Executive Board during their board meeting on Wednesday.
All KSHSAA member schools will have the option to utilize the shot clock for all home games, both boys and girls, at the varsity level. The trial will be for regular season games only. Schools that choose to do the trial, they must do so for all varsity games they host.
Emporia High girls coach Carolyn Dorsey said having a shot clock would be something the Lady Spartans are willing to try next season.
Emporia High boys coach Lee Baldwin said he wants to see some more data about possessions that last 35 seconds. Baldwin adds he would like to see the decision for a shot clock be made by the leagues rather than the individual schools.
Emporia High Athletic Director Beau Welch said this is the next step for the future of high school basketball.
Welch added with Emporia High’s new scoreboards, they’re already equipped for shot clocks. Welch said there would be additional equipment needing to be purchased to put on top of the backboards to indicate the game clock and shot clock are been utilized.
KSHSAA will collect data and observations next season before deciding on a permanent solution following the 2024-25 season. Schools wanting to participate in the trial need to notify KSHSAA by October 1.
