Two Iowa residents were hurt in a wreck on the Kansas Turnpike on Monday morning.
The wreck was reported at mile marker 106 southbound, just over 20 miles southwest of Emporia and about six miles southwest of the Flint Hills cattle pens. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, two SUVs were involved — one driven by 45-year-old Peter Hornung of Ottawa and and another driven by 70-year-old Gerald Sylvester of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Troopers say Hornung rear-ended Sylvester’s SUV, sending it into the center barrier wall.
Hornung was not hurt. Both Sylvester and a passenger, 75-year-old Linda Sylvester, also of Cedar Falls, were taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries.
All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck. The Highway Patrol’s crash log does not indicate why Hornung’s SUV rear-ended the Sylvester SUV and it does not indicate whether there was any ice at the crash site.
