The Emporia High Lady Spartans held off a late-game flurry by the Manhattan Lady Indians to pick up a 53-41 win Thursday night.
The Lady Spartans started hot outscoring Manhattan 13-4 in the first quarter. A 13-12 second quarter would see the Lady Spartans take a 10-point lead into the half.
Emporia would build their lead to as many as 12 at one time in the second half before the Lady Indians rallied in the third outscoring Emporia High 16-13 and cutting the lead to as few as four points. Manhattan would never overtake the lead, however, and some pinpoint shooting from the free-throw line would put the lead out of reach in the fourth.
Emporia High Head Coach Carolyn Dorsey says her team looked pretty strong after not having been on the court in over a week.
Senior Addie Kirmer led all scorers with 21 points on the night. Fellow senior Ryan Peak was the only other Lady Spartan in double figures ending the night with 11 points.
Manhattan was led in scoring by sophomore Kat Ball with 16 points. With the win the Lady Spartans improve to 7-1 on the year.
Emporia High will return to action next week in the Glacier’s Edge Tournament. The Lady Spartans are the two-seed and will play Wichita Southeast in the first round at 7 pm next Thursday.
