The city of Emporia has received state funding to help plan for infrastructure improvements near city schools.
Communications Manager Christine Torrens says the city got a Safe Routes to School planning grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The amount hasn’t been specified.
The grant is a collaboration involving the city, USD 253 Emporia and the city’s Multi-Use Path Planning Board. The grant will help local entities design a plan for all the city’s elementary schools and Emporia Middle School, with analysis of existing conditions, identifying possible infrastructure and non-infrastructure issues and public outreach. The overall goal is to have kids walk, bike and roll safely and comfortably to and from school.
