The Emporia State basketball teams were swept by Missouri Southern at White Auditorium on Sunday afternoon.
In the women’s game, the Lions used a late first half run to build separation and win 76-43. Both teams started quickly with the Lions leading 22-19 after one, but the Lions ended the half on an 8-0 run over the last 5 minutes and a 12-2 run over the final nine minutes of the first half to lead 37-24 at the break. MSSU backed up the 8-0 run with a 7-3 start to the second half and put away ESU by outscoring the Lady Hornets 17-6 in the fourth period. ESU finished just 23% from the field. Faith Paramore led the Lady Hornets with 20 points and 11 rebounds and was the only E-State player in double-figures in either category. Head Coach Brian Ostermann said the Lions got the pace of game that they wanted.
ESU drops to 9-8, 6-5 in the league with the defeat.
In the men’s game, the Lions surged early and held off the Hornets late in a 73-70 decision. MoSo used an 11-0 run in the first half to take a 24-11 lead with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half. ESU countered with a 15-2 run that spanned over seven minutes holding the Lions to just 1-for-10 shooting during the span to lead 35-32 at halftime. The teams played within two possessions for much of the second half until a 7-0 Lion run put them in front 65-58 with just over four minutes to play and ESU couldn’t get closer than two scores until an Owen Long tip-in at the buzzer. Alijah Comithier didn’t score in the first half but led the Hornets with 19 points while Owen Long added 18. Head coach Craig Doty said ESU kept itself in the game with their effort.
E-State falls to 12-7, 5-6 in the MIAA with the loss. Emporia State begins a four-game road swing this week by traveling to Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday. Coverage begins with the RV Doc Pregame Show at 5:00 p.m. on Mix 104.9. Listen online at KVOE.com/listen or via the Audacy app.
