To “remain committed to the change” was the theme for Sunday night’s rescheduled Martin Luther King Jr Celebration, held at First United Methodist Church and organized by the Eastside Community Group.
Speakers at the event reminded the audience that change has happened, but more change is needed to make society equal for all. Emporia State professor A’Kena LongBenton reminded people that part of Martin Luther King’s message dealt strictly with racial equality, but a significant part of his message also dealt with economic equality.
Speaking of being committed to change, Eastside Community Group leader Al Slappy says everybody makes significant commitments through their lives.
Sunday’s celebration featured perspectives on King’s message and longstanding impact on society, as well as music, prayers and breakout sessions so attendees could talk more about how to keep King’s message alive.
About 30 people attended.
