More rainfall and dense fog are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
As such, the National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for Lyon and all surrounding counties from 6 pm Tuesday until noon Wednesday. The patches of fog could lead to issues for local motorists as visibility could be reduced to a quarter mile or less in some areas.
Drivers are reminded to slow down, increase their distance between themselves and other vehicles and use low-beam headlights.
The incoming fog will follow similar conditions from earlier Monday as fog set in just before sunrise across the area leading to reduced visibility and some isolated icing. Several area school districts announced 2-hour delays and USD 434 Santa Fe Trail closed for the day due to travel conditions.
Kandrive.gov shows conditions are either clear to seasonal across all area highways.

11 am Tuesday: Fog thinning but likely to return
Travel conditions are easing areawide after isolated icing and widespread fog earlier in the day.
Conditions have been wet in Emporia all morning as overnight lows held just above freezing. Isolated icing was an issue in and around Lyon County, mainly on elevated surfaces. Area highways are clear to seasonal areawide.
Fog descended on the area before sunrise, bringing visibility down to a quarter-mile or less and also leading to some of the icing. Several area school districts announced 2-hour delays and USD 434 Santa Fe Trail closed for the day due to travel conditions.
Besides far more limited travel issues Tuesday than we saw Monday, when icing was widespread, there was more good news when the KVOE studios got half an inch of rain overnight. The Emporia Municipal Airport got 0.39 inches.
Accumulating rainfall is likely overnight into early Wednesday, and a return of patchy dense fog is also possible. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for updates.
6:30 am Tuesday: Icy conditions isolated; dense fog advisory covers all area counties until noon
Hazardous travel conditions aren’t nearly as widespread Tuesday morning as they were at the same time Monday.
Overnight temperatures have held just above freezing areawide, so icy conditions have been limited. Here’s Lyon County Deputy Doug Stump:
Area highways are almost all listed as seasonal, meaning isolated to widely scattered icing. The exceptions are Kansas Highway 177 between Strong City and Cassoday and Kansas Highway 150 west of US Highway 50. Both are partly covered.
In Emporia, major streets and side streets are all wet at this time.
This is a big improvement from Monday, when there was a thin glaze of ice everywhere as temperatures stayed below freezing through early morning. If we see a dip below 32 degrees, City Manager Trey Cocking says the work done Monday should at least help minimize any travel issues Tuesday.
While widespread icing isn’t an issue at this time, visibility is a concern. All area counties are in a dense fog advisory until noon with visibility at or below a quarter-mile in some spots. Drivers are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights and increase the driving distance between their vehicles and the others nearby.
