Foggy conditions apparently contributed to Wednesday’s wreck that directly led to widespread power outages affecting southern Lyon County and portions of neighboring counties.
Lyon County Deputy Jody Meyers says a rollover wreck happened around 5 am in the 700 block of Kansas Highway 99. Meyers says 28-year-old Kenneth Derryberry of Madison was driving a truck southbound, but dense fog made it difficult for Derryberry to see the highway. The passenger-side tires went off the highway at the junction of K-99 and Lyon County Road K-5 just outside Olpe where K-99 angles from a north-south highway to a northwest-southeast direction. As a result, the truck trailer went into a ditch and hit a utility pole.
Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles says there were downed power lines near the truck.
Emporia Fire did not take Derryberry to a hospital for treatment, but Meyers says Derryberry was taken by private vehicle to Newman Regional Health for observation and possible treatment.
The wreck knocked out power to nearly 500 Evergy customers along K-99 from Emporia to the Lyon-Greenwood county line, including the entire town of Olpe, for over two hours. Another 400 customers of 4 Rivers Electric in Lyon County, along with another 30 combined in Chase, Coffey and Greenwood counties, were also affected.
USD 252 Southern Lyon County had no delays for school or daycare. Kansas Highway 99 was closed for a time, first for the medical response and downed lines and later as Evergy replaces the downed power pole. The highway has since reopened.
Besides deputies, Emporia Fire, Olpe Fire, Evergy, the Kansas Department of Transportation and Lyon County Highway Department all responded to the wreck site.
