The Emporia Senior Center is searching for a new leader.
Ian Boyd has resigned from his roles as president and chief executive officer after five-plus years leading the facility, citing health concerns as the reason behind his departure. In a social media post Thursday, Boyd says he was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2020.
Boyd was hired in August 2018 following a short time as a volunteer grant writer after the Senior Center had suffered through the theft of over $100,000 the prior two years by former director Lannie Lyman. Boyd says the center has struggled financially due to the embezzlement, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, interruptions of the charitable gaming program and ongoing roof leaks.
Boyd oversaw the addition of a second bingo night last summer as a way to generate more funds. He also oversaw a new partnership with the University of Kansas Osher Institute.
Boyd says the Senior Center Board of Directors will assume his responsibilities effective immediately, but he will stay on to close out the 2023 financial books and file the center’s IRS Form 990.
