The Emporia High boys basketball team used a strong second half against Manhattan on Saturday night.
Emporia High trailed 20-10 in the second quarter and 26-19 at halftime. The Spartans outscored the Indians 36-22 in the second half en route to a 55-48 victory.
The Indians led 6-0 early before Emporia High tied the game at 8, but Manhattan turned that into a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 10 and eventually turned into a 26-19 lead at halftime. Emporia High outscored Manhattan 18-10 in the third to take a 37-36 lead after Madden Seidl went 1-for-2 at the free throw line with .6 left in the quarter.
Emporia High led for the entire fourth quarter with Manhattan only pulling within two on multiple occasions.
Sheldon Stewart led Emporia High with a career-high 22 points. River Peters added 18 and Nolan Jacob tallied a career-high 10 points.
Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said it was a program-type win.
Emporia High improved to 8-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Centennial League. Emporia High will host Topeka High on Tuesday. The RV-Doc Pregame Show will begin after the girls game and can be heard on Mix 104.9.
