The Emporia High girls basketball team claimed the 50th annual Glacier’s Edge Tournament championship Saturday afternoon with a 53-45 victory over Blue Valley.
It’s the 15th time the Lady Spartans have won their home tournament in program history. The win also extended their winning streak to eight and was the second consecutive win over a team ranked in Class 6A.
Emporia High got off to a fast start and led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Spartans led by as many as 10 in the first half before Blue Valley took a 24-23 lead at halftime. The two teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter with the Tigers clinging to a 39-38 lead heading into the fourth. The game was tied at 45 with four minutes to play when Lexsey Dewitt hit a 3-pointer to start an 8-0 run that lasted until the clock hit zero.
Three Lady Spartans scored in double-figures led by Ryan Peak, who scored a career-high 17 points. Dewitt recorded a new career-high of 15. Addie Kirmer capped off her tournament run with 15.
Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said it was a battle to win its third game in three days in their home tournament.
Kirmer was named the tournament’s most valuable player scoring 72 points for the three games. Kirmer said it was a team effort to win the tournament.
Emporia High is now 10-1 on the season. The Lady Spartans will have a full allotment of games coming up with three beginning with a make-up game with Topeka on Tuesday at Spartan Gymnasium.
