It was a split for Emporia High on Winter Sports Night against Washburn Rural Friday night.
The Emporia High girls picked up a historic win by defeating Washburn Rural for the first time since 2007, 43-22. After trailing 2-0, it would be all Lady Spartans. Emporia High led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter and had a 14-1 second to lead 26-6 at halftime. The Lady Spartans led by as many as 24 in the contest.
Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said the Lady Spartans played the perfect game.
Three Lady Spartans scored in double figures led by Ryan Peak’s 11 points. Lexsey Dewitt and Addie Kirmer each had 10.
Emporia High improved to 12-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Centennial League. The Lady Spartans will play a makeup game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Spartan Gymnasium against Junction City. The game will be on Country 101.7 FM.
In the boys game, it would be all Washburn Rural defeating Emporia High 48-31. The Junior Blues built a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. Emporia High pulled within three in the second quarter but not any closer. The Junior Blues led 18-13 at halftime and turned that into a 31-22 lead heading into the fourth.
River Peters led Emporia High with 17 points while Sheldon Stewart added 14.
Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said the Spartans weren’t ready to go.
Emporia High dropped to 9-5 on the season, 3-2 in the Centennial League. The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they host Hayden.
