The Emporia State baseball team finished 2-1 at the Edmond First Pitch Classic to start the season with a 15-5 win over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday. After combining for just two hits over the first three frames, NMHU scored two in the bottom of the fourth before ESU answered with three to lead 3-2 after four. Following a scoreless fifth, each team plated three runs in the sixth. The Hornets closed out the game with four runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to pull off the run rule victory. Konnor Hatfield led the way going 4-for-6 with six RBI’s with a double and his first home run of the season. Five Hornets had multi-hit games with Austin Hamm going 3-for-3 with 4 runs and an RBI and TJ Racherbaumer finishing 3-for-5 with 3 runs and a solo homer. Ian Lanik lasted five innings for E-State allowing six hits and two runs in a no decision. Seth Stover (1-0) pitched two innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Emporia State opens up home play Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex for a four-game series against the Colorado School of Mines. First pitch for game one of the series is set for 3:00 p.m.
