The Emporia State basketball teams fell in a sweep against Northwest Missouri on Wednesday night at White Auditorium.
After holding the Bearcats to their worst 3-point shooting day in their first matchup, the Lady Hornets allowed the Bearcats to have their best day from outside the arc in an 86-52 loss. Northwest finished 15-for-36 outside the arc in the game with two Bearcats hitting four threes. Northwest led after 10 minutes in a quick-paced 20-18 first quarter before burying the Lady Hornets 31-12 in the second frame to lead 51-30 at the half. Northwest was 11-for-14 in the second quarter while ESU finished just 4-for-13. Head coach Brian Ostermann said the first quarter pace was too quick for E-State.
Faith Paramore led the way with 21 points in defeat while Gracie Gilpin tacked on 13. ESU drops to 10-12, 7-9 in the MIAA with the loss.
In the men’s game, ESU rallied from 14 down with less than eight minutes to play but fell 64-61 to the #12 Bearcats. ESU led 13-6 early but Northwest ended the half on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes of the frame to lead 36-26 at the break. Northwest built the lead to 59-45 with 8:17 to go before ESU chipped back into the game. ESU ended the game on a 6-1 run over the final 4:30 forcing multiple shot clock violations down the stretch. ESU got one final stop and called timeout with 14 seconds to go, but an Alijah Comithier 3-pointer was wide left with five seconds to play. Head coach Craig Doty said his team’s defense gave them a shot in the final stretch.
Alijah Comithier scored 26 points and crossed 2000 points in his collegiate career. Atavian Butler added 15. ESU falls to 14-10, 7-9 in the MIAA with the defeat.
