Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is asking the federal government for more time to request a major disaster declaration for the winter weather that hit most of the state a month ago.
The governor has asked FEMA to extend the paperwork deadline to April 15, thus giving state officials more time to assess damage caused by occasional heavy snow, high winds and wind chills that reached almost -30 just in the KVOE listening area at times between Jan. 7-16.
The state is seeking federal cost-share assistance through the Public Assistance program for damaged public infrastructure, including roads and bridges.
