Area residents still have time to help support troops overseas by contributing to a care package drive that has already seen a high level of participation in a short period.
The deadline to provide items and monetary donations to support the 387th Movement Control Team, a 40-soldier detachment deployed at an unspecified location overseas as part of a year-long tour, is Friday. The team is led by Staff Sergeant Stephen Nuessen and has been recently impacted by attacks in the area.
Nuessen’s wife, Alexis, organized the care package drive in partnership with Emporia Main Street over the last month and says the recent attacks have left many soldiers “on edge.”
Over the past few weeks, Nuessen and Main Street have been requesting various items including puzzles, snacks, coloring books, hygiene products, lotion and more. During an interview with KVOE News Wednesday morning, Nuessen stated the greatest need they have at this time is monetary donations.
If you would like to give financially you bring cash or checks to the Main Street Office or Venmo your donation to @Emporiamainstreet.
For those wishing to donate supplies, you can bring your items to the Emporia Main Street office, 727 Commercial, during business hours through Friday. Local businesses have also contributed to the drive by providing discounts on certain items such as Trox Gallery and Gifts which is offering ten percent off on all puzzles.
