Six members of the Emporia High girls wrestling team are heading to state after qualifying at the Class 6-5A Regional C Tournament at Junction City on Saturday.
Two members finished as regional runners-up. Senior Katina Keosybounheuang is heading to state for a third time. Keosybounheuang finished as the regional runner-up at 120 as she was pinned in 3:03 by Manhattan’s Kayla Cramer in the regional championship match. Sophomore Alexa Castillo will be making a second consecutive trip to state at 235. Castillo was pinned in 2:20 to Salina Central’s Cindric White in the regional championship match.
Junior Heily Batres will be making her first trip to state. . Batres pinned Wichita Southeast’s Summer Sath in 57 seconds to finish third at 105. Sophomore Kensley Medrano will be making her second trip to state. Medrano pinned Newton’s Jaeann James in 1:24 to take third at 130. Senior Virginia Munoz qualified for state for the fourth consecutive year. Munoz finished third at 140 via a medical forfeit over Manhattan’s Alayna Slifer. Yaneli Carranza qualified for state for the first time. Carranza finished fourth at 155 as she lost the third-place match by a 10-8 over Brooklyn Orange of Wichita Southeast.
As a team, Emporia High finished fourth with 121 points finishing behind Washburn Rural, Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Manhattan.
The Class 6-5A State Championships will be held February 22-24 at Hartman Arena in Park City. First round matches are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on February 22.
