The Emporia High basketball teams split their doubleheader in Manhattan on Tuesday night.
The Emporia High girls were tested against the Lady Indians. The Lady Spartans trailed by six in the second quarter but rallied in the second half for a 44-43 victory to win their 14th consecutive game. Senior Lexsey Dewitt went 1-for-2 at the free throw line with eight seconds remaining plus a Manhattan turnover with 1.8 seconds left gave the Lady Spartans the victory. Manhattan led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter which eventually turned into a 25-23 halftime advantage. Senior Addie Kirmer gave Emporia High its first lead early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer and both teams would go back and forth with Manhattan clinging to a 36-35 lead heading into the fourth. Emporia High would get a lead of 43-39 late before Manhattan tied the game at 43 with Dewitt making the game-winning free throw. Dewitt led Emporia High with 10 points.
Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said it was a team effort to get a tough win on the road.
Emporia High is now 16-1 on the season and 8-0 in the Centennial League.
The Manhattan boys led wire-to-wire in a 47-36 victory over the Spartans. Manhattan led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter. Emporia High pulled within one at 11-10 early in the second quarter but it was the closest it would get the rest of the game. The Indians led 27-16 at halftime and 43-27 at the end of three. Cooper Rech led Emporia High with 11 points.
Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said it wasn’t the Spartans’ best game of the season.
Emporia High is now 11-6 on the season, 5-3 in the Centennial League. Both teams will play their final regular season home games on Friday against Junction City. The RV-Doc Pregame Show is set for 5:40 p.m. on KVOE.
