It was a split on Senior Night for the Emporia High basketball teams Friday at Spartan Gymnasium against Junction City.
The Emporia High girls clinched an outright Centennial League championship with a 39-7 victory over the Lady Blue Jays. It’s the first league championship for the Lady Spartans since 1997. Emporia High led 17-0 at the end of one and 27-0 at halftime. Junction City did not score its first points until 4:13 left in the third quarter. Emporia High led by as many as 33 in the contest with a running clock in the fourth quarter. Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 10. Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said this group is deserving of being league champions.
Emporia High has won 15 consecutive games and is now 17-1 on the season and 9-0 in league play.
Junction City led wire-to-wire in a 56-41 victory over the Spartans. The Blue Jays led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and 29-13 at halftime. The closest Emporia High got in the second half was 43-33 late in the third quarter. River Peters led Emporia High with 22 points. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said there’s still adjustments to be made heading into the final week of the regular season.
Emporia High will have two games apiece remaining beginning with makeup games from January 9 at Paola on Thursday. The games will be carried on KVOE with the RV-Doc Pregame Show set for 5:40 p.m. with the girls tipping at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow at 7:30 p.m.
