The Messiah Lutheran Church was a busy place Saturday morning for a big fundraiser to help a man fighting cancer.
Since June 2022, Mike Morris has been dealing with metastatic melanoma. Morris says he’s fortunate for the community’s support that showed up for his cause.
A biscuits and gravy breakfast was served along with raffles on a goat or calf shed, tree services, and a load of gravel. There were also raffles for multiple guns. People could also order T-shirts for later delivery.
Morris recently had arm surgery on his left arm and is traveling to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston next week for additional consultations. Morris recently had completed some radiations in his brain.
Organizer Richelle Birk says it didn’t take long for community members to get involved to help with Morris’ cause.
Birk says within 7-10 days after announcing the fundraiser, they were nearly halfway to their goal of $20,000. Saturday’s fundraiser saw over 500 people attend. Birk says one of the 12 prizes was donated back and auctioned off for $1,100. Birk says they surpassed the fundraising goal after Saturday’s event.
Fundraising totals from Saturday’s event are still pending, but early indications are the event went well above goal.
