The Lyon County Attorney’s Office is reviewing affidavits and other supporting documents after the Super Bowl Sunday crash into the Emporia State Student Recreation Building.
As with Emporia Police all last week, Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman is not currently divulging the identity of the person who crashed into a west wall at an apparently high rate of speed, damaging a load-bearing wall and prompting both an extrication from the vehicle and subsequent transport of the driver to Newman Regional Health by Emporia Fire.
While this process continues, ESU Recreation Services Director Mike Wise says conversations between university staff and structural engineers have determined the weight room will remain off limits until further notice, but the rest of the building can be used during that specific repair process — so the building will reopen Feb. 26. All cardio equipment will be available, as will some strength-training equipment. The gymnasium, fitness studio and restrooms will also be open for use.
Emporia Police has said an officer tried to conduct a welfare stop about 15 minutes before the crash was reported Feb. 11. The driver allegedly drove off and went airborne as it crested the 18th Avenue hill on campus just west of the Student Recreation Building. The officer did not pursue due to the alleged speeds involved.
