The Emporia Recreation Commission will continue its conversations about a new or expanded public recreation facility — and the steering committee memorandum of understanding between ERC, the City Commission and USD 253 Emporia — at its meeting Monday.
The MOU has been adjusted over the past month, in part to include USD 253 and in part to change the membership structure, as the Rec Commission works towards a major facility decision. The Future Funding Task Force Committee, which helped to set the path for the steering committee, has already recommended either a half-cent or one-cent sales tax as the main funding mechanism, regardless of the direction taken on the overall facility.
Rec Commission administrators and board members say the Lee Beran Recreation Center at 301 West Fourth has less than half the space needed for current or future demand.
The Lyon County Commission is also set to be represented on the steering committee but has not formally discussed the document as of last word.
Other business Monday includes updates on tracking out-of-school district program registrations, the recently-held Kansas Recreation and Parks Association state conference and the upcoming Class 5A state basketball tournament.
The meeting is at 5:30 pm at the Lee Beran Rec Center.
