To say Hartford middle schooler Crady Meek was excited when the word amnesia was announced as his final word in the 2024 Lyon County Spelling Bee Tuesday morning would be an understatement.
Meek correctly spelled the word to be crowned this year’s spelling bee champion after nine rounds and more than two hours of competition. The runner-up was fellow Hartford student Brady Kelly.
Finishing in third place was Emporia Christian School student Logan Hopkins. This year’s spelling bee was held at Olpe High School with more than 30 contestants from county elementary and middle schools.
With the win, Meek now advances to the Sunflower State Spelling Bee which will be held at Kansas Weslyan University in Salina on Saturday, March 23.
With a win at state, Meek will qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee being held May 28-30 in National Harbor, Maryland.
