The Emporia-Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission has given its blessing to a residential housing development in southwest Emporia.
Planning Commission members voted unanimously to recommend the final plat and Planned Unit Development paperwork for the Lockwood Subdivision just west of Sixth and Stratford. The goal is to build 24 homes just south of Sixth between Stratford and Graham.
Separately, the Planning Commission discussed a tentative plan to build a temporary travel trailer park at 820 Congress for Emporia’s large-scale events like Unbound Gravel, Halfway to Everywhere, Cinco de Mayo, No Coast Film Festival, major disc golf events and All Veterans Tribute. Ultimately, the board recommended denial. Concerns were raised about trailer traffic, especially when dealing with parking and leaving the area. Lot size, alley damage and general impact to the neighborhood were all reasons for the recommendation.
Emporia city commissioners will have the final decision, perhaps as soon as next month. In the case of the temporary trailer park, applicants would need a supermajority — meaning at least four votes — to override the Planning Commission’s recommendation.
