The parking lot in the 700 Block of Mechanic Street will be closed, possibly through the remainder of the week, due to upcoming construction.
According to Emporia Communications Manager Christine Torrens, the city is set to begin construction for light pole bases in the area Tuesday. The work is scheduled to take up to three days to complete.
The construction work is related to a reconstruction project for both the 600 and 700 blocks of Mechanic Street and may effect businesses in the area as well as parking availability for events and activities at William Lindsey White Auditorium through the spring.
This is the second project announced in as many days that will cause a change for local motorists as the city also announced a previously unplanned sanitary sewer line repair project on South Avenue from Peyton to Carter that began Tuesday. According to City Engineer Jim Ubert, the project is related to the Peyton Street waterline replacement project between Ninth and 12th.
Ubert says the line was “discovered when the contractor hit it.” Additional details are pending.
The repair project may take up to 10 days to complete, weather permitting. Due to the project, eastbound traffic on South between Peyton and Carter will be closed.
