Formal charges are now pending after a shots fired call and an arrest in central Emporia on Tuesday night.
Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says Juan Cervantes Jr, age 33 of Emporia, was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, as well as unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits, interference with law enforcement and possession of both marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms tells KVOE News he heard shots south of the 1000 block of Neosho, while several residents called Lyon County Emergency Dispatch shortly before 9 pm to report either shots fired or a suspicious person running in the general area.
Mattas says officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Neosho to begin their investigation, allegedly finding Cervantes in the area of the gunshots. Mattas says Cervantes allegedly fled but was found again and arrested.
Both Mattas and Vortherms say several shell casings were found during the investigation, which included the use of a Lyon County Sheriff’s Office drone to recover at least one discarded firearm.

Reports of shots fired in central Emporia led to an arrest Tuesday night.

Vortherms says officers arrested a man on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits and interference with law enforcement. Vortherms also says there were at least 10 shell casings found as part of the initial investigation.
There are currently no reports of injuries or gun-related damage.
Lyon County deputies helped with the investigation.
