Fourteen area wrestlers are still standing after day one of the Class 4-1A girls state wrestling championships and Class 3-2-1A boys state championships in Salina.
Chase County has all three wrestlers still alive with two wrestlers in the semifinals. Kinzie Rogers at 110 on the girls side in 4-1A and Micah Cauthers on the boys side in 3-2-1A. Brock Griffin went 1-1 winning his opening bout before falling in the quarterfinals.
All three Northern Heights Wildcats are still alive after day one each going 1-1. Cole Gerleman at 113 lost his first match before winning his first-round consolation bout. Leo DeDonder at 126 lost his first match before winning his first-round consolation bout. Logan Schlimme at 150 won his opening round match before dropping his quarterfinal match.
Burlingame has four of its five wrestlers still alive after day one. Maliyah Lopez went 2-0 on day one and is in the semifinals at 105. The biggest upset was Logan Courtois at 132, as Courtois was handed his second loss of the season in the quarterfinals after winning his opening-round match. Chase Courtois at 106 won his opening round match before falling in the quarterfinals. Jose Arevalo at 175 lost his opening round match before winning his first round consolation match. Eli Moon at 126 went 0-2.
Council Grove has one in the semifinals with Bradley Doornbros at 120. Nate Seimears (113), Caden Honer (157) and Ace Monhian (190) each went 1-1 on the day. Holden Zeigler went 1-2 at 285. Jameson Fetters (106), Mason Wilkens (132), Hadley Smith (144), and Tyler Hutchinson (215) each went 0-2. Council Grove’s lone girl wrestler, Brenah Cannon at 170, went 1-1 and won her first-round consolation match.
Osage City’s Caydance Eastman went 0-2 at 125.
The Class 4-1A girls tournament resumes with second round consolation matches at Noon Friday with 3-2-1A boys to follow at 2 p.m. at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
