It was quick work for the Emporia High basketball teams at Paola Thursday night.
The Emporia High girls defeated the Lady Panthers, 55-21, to win their 16th consecutive game. Emporia High trailed 1-0 but then went on an 11-0 run and never looked back. The closest Paola got was six at 18-12 in the second quarter, but Emporia High used a 13-0 run to lead 31-12 at halftime. Emporia High outscored Paola 24-9 in the second half and had a running clock in the fourth quarter. Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 18 points while Alexa Shivley added a career-high 13. Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said they knew they had to take care of business before Friday’s game against Washburn Rural.
The Lady Spartans are now 18-1 on the season. Meanwhile, a 9-0 start for the Emporia High boys in the first 1:12 of the game set the tone in their game en route to an 83-36 victory over the Panthers. Emporia High led 24-9 at the end of the first quarter en route to a 53-19 lead at halftime. The Spartans had a running clock in the fourth quarter. Harry Trelc led the way for Emporia High with a career-high 20 points. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said getting back into the win column is a confidence booster heading into the regular season finale.
The Spartans are now 12-7 on the season. Both teams have a quick turnaround heading to Washburn Rural on Friday night. The RV-Doc Pregame Show begins at 5:40 p.m. on KVOE.
