The Emporia High Boys wrestling team is guaranteed two State placers following day one competition at the 5A State tournament.
Isaiah Morales (126 lbs) and Josiah Bradley (285 lbs) were both 2-0 on the day. Morales won his first match over Frankie Garcia of Bonner Springs 5-3 and dominated Sumner Academy’s Miles Dean in the champions quarterfinals 11-3.
Bradley defeated Austin Jasso of Pittsburg by Fall in the first minute of his opening round match and would pull out a last-second 3-2 win over Dawson Rodd of Andover Central to advance to the championship semi-finals. With their wins, Bradley and Morales have secured a spot on the podium.
The championship semi-finals will take place Friday morning.
Three other Spartan wrestlers were 1-1 on the day and will compete in the second round of the consolation bracket to begin day two on Friday. Gabe Wassom (113), Dustin Dobson (150), and Christian Trujillo (157) all won their opening-round matches, Wassom by tech fall, Dobson by 5-4 decision and Trujillo by fall in the second period.
All three were defeated in their championship quarter-final matches, Wassom and Dobson by Fall and Trujillo by decision 11-2.
Kolton Wyatt (106) was 0-2 on the day losing by fall in both his opening round and consolation matchups.
