The Emporia State softball pushed its winning streak to 10 games with two wins at day one of the Washburn Invitational in Topeka on Friday. The Lady Hornets started the day with a 12-7 victory over Minot State. ESU jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three and a half innings and never trailed. ESU plated four in the first, two in the second and three in the third. Abbey Ward smashed her first home run of the year on the way to hitting 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Four other Lady Hornets had two-hit games. Jayda VanAckeren (4-2) lasted 4.0 innings surrendering eight hits and five earned runs to pick up the win. ESU tallied late to knock off Minnesota State 3-2 in game two. After trailing by one in the bottom of the second, a Haley Garnett solo shot tied the game. ESU plated two in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Avery Brewer. Grace Rabe (2-1) scattered eight hits over 6.0 innings allowing one earned run while overcoming two Lady Hornet errors. ESU improved to 11-6 with the wins and will play two games Saturday and two Sunday to wrap up the event.
