The Emporia State basketball teams swept Lincoln to wrap up their home schedule at White Auditorium on Saturday.
In the women’s game, the Lady Hornets used a big second second quarter to pull away and a big fourth quarter to put away the Blue Tigers 73-59. The teams were tied at 13 through one when ESU started the second frame on an 11-0 run to lead 24-13 with just over five minutes to go. Lincoln cut the lead to five in the second quarter but ESU scored the last five of the half to lead 31-21 at the break. Head coach Brian Ostermann said the late run was big to give the Lady Hornets some margin in the second half.
Lincoln chopped the lead down to two in the second half but ESU won the fourth period 22-14 to put LU away. Gracie Gilpin scored a career high 23 points while Faith Paramore scored 12 with 13 rebounds for another double-double. ESU improves to 13-13, 10-10 in the MIAA with the win.
In the men’s game, the Hornets won a physical, bruising battle 66-57 over Lincoln. LU controlled the first half leading 31-25 holding ESU to just 36% shooting in the first half. ESU shot 43% in the second half and finished 8-for-16 at the 3-point line in the game. The Hornets outscored Lincoln 22-0 at the foul line. Lincoln head coach Jimmy Drew received two technicals and was ejected from the game in the second half. Head coach Craig Doty talked about what’s ahead for the Hornets after the game.
Alijah Comithier scored 24 points with eight rebounds to lead the Hornets. Owen Long added 16 as did Drew Tennial who finished 4-for-4 from the 3-point line. He said the afternoon was a perfect way to wrap up the home schedule.
