Local drivers may notice a larger police presence around area high schools beginning Monday.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with other law enforcement agencies across Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma to increase traffic enforcement near local high schools. According to a recent news release from Lyon County Deputy Jody Meyers, “Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in
the United States – ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence.”
In the same release, Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says, “Even
one teen death is unacceptable. Please slow down, put the phone away or turn it off, and always buckle up.” As part of the enforcement effort, officers will be issuing citations for speeding, texting and driving and failing to buckle up.
The enforcement campaign will run until March 8.
