Over the last dozen years, the quality of Emporia’s drinking water has been noted repeatedly at the prestigious tasting contest in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. And it got recognized again this past weekend.
Emporia’s tap water got a bronze medal for appearance, taste, mouth feel and aftertaste. On KVOE’s Newsmaker 3 segment Monday, City Manager Trey Cocking says the award reflects ongoing foresight by city leaders as well as hard work by city staff.

6:20 am Monday: Emporia’s drinking water takes third place at international contest in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
For the second straight year, Emporia’s drinking water earned a top-4 finish at the internationally-acclaimed tasting contest in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
Emporia finished third in the world as announced this past weekend, earning a bronze medal. Santa Ana, California, earned gold. Montpelier, Ohio, took home silver.
Water samples were rated by appearance, taste, mouth feel and aftertaste. There were over 100 entries across five continents for this year’s competition.
Last year, Emporia finished tied for fourth. Emporia has won Berkeley Springs’ municipal water category in 2013 and was second in 2017. Emporia’s water has also won the Kansas Rural Water Association contest several times since 2003 and won the Kansas Water Environment Association and Kansas Section of the American Water Works Association in 2007, 2012 and 2022.
