Fires in and around Emporia on Tuesday highlighted the critical to extreme fire conditions in place through the rest of the day.
Emporia firefighters battled a stubborn set of fires outside Advantage Metals, 302 Graham, that developed shortly before 11 am. Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage tells KVOE News there were three piles of scrap metals and other items on fire when crews arrived.
It took about an hour and 15 minutes to get the fire out. The cause is currently unclear.
Separately, a grass fire was noted in the 3000 block of Road S a bit around 11:20 am. An update is pending. Allen-Admire, Miller and Reading were dispatched to handle that fire.
Wind gusts were 20-40 mph as firefighters handled these incidents. Red flag warnings, signaling critical fire danger and automatic burn bans for affected counties in the KVOE listening area, continue until 6 to 8 pm, depending on the county — but outdoor burns will be strongly discouraged through the upcoming weekend due to strong winds, shifting wind directions and dry conditions.
