The Kansas Turnpike continues moving towards cashless tolling by July.
Much of the main line work is done, according to Turnpike Authority CEO Steve Hewitt on KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday. Connected to that — and coming soon — will be demolition of tollbooths, including the one at Emporia. Hewitt says there will be gantries installed at tollbooths, but the billing will actually happen near the gates, not at the gates themselves.
Hewitt also says the tollbooth areas will be restriped.
Meanwhile, Hewitt encouraged residents to buy KTAGs, saying they will save drivers 50 percent of the non-KTAG cost. He also mentioned plans to make the KTA compatible with the Colorado system, with the KTA already compatible with turnpikes in Florida, Oklahoma and Texas. He also highlighted some of the numerous construction projects for the highway cutting through the KVOE listening area, including a redeck/rehab/widening project at mile marker 125 just southwest of the Emporia gate and drainage improvements and pavement repairs between the Emporia service exit and Admire-Council Grove tollgate.
