Emporia Fire handled a small fire just north of the city limits Thursday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 1100 block of Road 190 shortly before 10 am. Fire Capt. Michel Nunley says some people had burned charcoal but caught a small patch of grass on fire. Emporia Fire handled the situation quickly.
Separately, Emporia and Hartford-Neosho Rapids were called to handle a grass fire near Roads 150 and U on Thursday afternoon, but Nunley says Emporia was canceled before arriving. Hartford-Neosho Rapids Fire Chief Greg Zumbrunn says less than an acre of grass was on fire, but several trees were also on fire when his district arrived. The burning grass was extinguished and the fire in the trees was contained, but Zumbrunn says that area will likely be contained for weeks.
Zumbrunn tells KVOE News the fire was the result of a controlled burn from Monday.
