Scam artists are at it once again and this time they are targeting trusted media outlets to try and reel in new victims.
In recent months there has been an alarming number of spam posts appearing on various news and media outlets’ social media channels, including KVOE’s Facebook page, from individuals claiming they have exclusive updates or coverage of emergency incidents or upcoming sporting events. The posts are not credible and are posted by scammers looking to steal sensitive information from readers.
If you notice posts from individuals not affiliated with said news or media outlets claiming to have “exclusive footage” of emergency incidents of any kind or athletic competitions you are asked not to click on them. An example of said posts includes a fake YouTube link with “JUST IN: Police released terrifying CCTV footage” or similar wording to entice individuals to click on it.
If you see a post such as this on an article or news post, please alert the entity that administered the post immediately so the link can be removed.
This is just the latest effort by social media scam artists to try and steal users’ information. Other efforts have included scammers creating fake profiles of someone in an individual’s contact list and messaging users claiming they need money, someone close to them has recently died or that they have been hacked and need the user’s phone number to help them recover their account.
If you receive any messages of this kind you are advised not to answer it and instead report the activity and then block the profile.
