Areas south of Emporia are in a severe thunderstorm watch.
This includes Greenwood County in the KVOE listening area. The watch lasts until 9 pm and reflects the risk of tennis ball-sized hail and 70 mph winds.
No other area counties are in a watch, although Lyon County and most neighboring counties are in a marginal risk for severe weather. Greenwood County is currently in a slight severe weather risk.

We have our first marginal risk designation for the KVOE listening area for the 2024 season Thursday.
Lyon and all surrounding counties are in the risk area with the possibility of hail and wind at times through the day. Morning storms may generate hail up to the size of quarters, although the National Weather Service says evening storms may offer the better risk, with isolated storms dumping hail to the size of half dollars. Peak wind gusts may be around 60 mph with the stronger storms.
The storms highlight much-needed rainfall coming to the KVOE listening area. One to two inches of rainfall is possible areawide through Friday night.
