The Emporia High girls basketball team could not get anything going in their Class 5A state semifinal against Maize South Friday night at White Auditorium.
Maize South led wire-to-wire in a 55-47 victory over the Lady Spartans, snapping their 20-game winning streak. The win gave the Lady Mavs their 19th consecutive win.
Emporia High started out cold from the field 1 for their first 11 shots from the field and trailed 11-6. The Lady Spartans cut the deficit to five at 22-17 at halftime. Maize South extend its lead to as many as 12 in the third quarter, 35-23. Emporia High was able to get back within four late, but Maize South answered and never looked back.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 17 points while Alexa Shivley added 11.
Emporia High coach Carolyn Dorsey said the Lady Spartans struggled defensively for the second consecutive night.
Emporia High is now 22-2 on the season. The Lady Spartans will play for third against Andover at 2 p.m. Saturday at White Auditorium. The game will be on Mix 104.9 with pregame at 1:50 p.m.
