The steering committee tasked with charting direction for a brand-new or expanded public recreation facility in Emporia has its first meeting Monday, and it has a lot of items to address.
Board members will start with a presentation on the project’s scope before diving into an overview of the memorandum of understanding and the steering committee’s role in how the Emporia Recreation Commission should move forward. The board will also select a chair and vice-chair and discuss the role of an independent consultant before a conversation on a Request for Qualification so architects can start plans for either a new or expanded facility.
An open discussion and conversations on next steps and immediate action items will follow before the meeting adjourns.
Rec Commission leaders have said the current public facility, the Lee Beran Recreation Center at 313 West Fourth, has less than half the space needed to meet the current and future demand.
Committee members meet at 3:30 pm at White Auditorium Conference Room 1 AB.
